Yes, unfortunately this is a fact. From the 1800s to the early 1900s mummies were hot items on the black market. Europeans bought them for their private collections; often unwrapping them in front of guests as a form of "entertainment". For some time, powder from ground mummies was believed to possess powerfull magical and healing abilities. Mummies were also ground up and used as fertilizer.
