The Sphinx was allegedly built well before the Pyramids but by whom nobody knows. The story goes that the civilization which constructed it died out and then the Egyptians came along, found the sculpture and decided to base their own cities etc on the same site. Somewhere along the way, the Sphinx was recarved to resemble one of the Pharaohs (supposedly Chephren - but this is open to speculation). It is also noted (by Hancock and Bauval) that the Sphinx has water erosion on the base which could indicate that Egypt was a very different place when the statue was constructed.
